In Mexico massage therapists, called "sobadores", combine massage using oil or lotion[101] with a form of acupuncture and faith.[102] Sobadores are used to relieve digestive system problems as well as knee and back pain.[101][102] Many of these therapists work out of the back of a truck, with just a curtain for privacy.[102] By learning additional holistic healer's skills in addition to massage, the practitioner may become a curandero.[103]
$70 for an hour is reasonable but their massage is MUCH better than any other traditional place that you have visited.  The only downfall is that this place isn't one of the posh, tranquility type places like Asha (get extra pampered, zero sound/noises in entire facility, heated beds etc) - unfortunately I could clearly hear through the walls of conversations taking place but they didn't last long so it didn't really bother me.
In fact, the history of Thai massage is more complex than this legend of a single founder would suggest. Thai massage, like Thai traditional medicine (TTM) more generally, is a combination of influences from Indian, Chinese, Southeast Asian cultural spheres, and traditions of medicine, and the art as it is practiced today is likely to be the product of a 19th-century synthesis of various healing traditions from all over the kingdom.[6] Even today, there is considerable variation from region to region across Thailand, and no single routine or theoretical framework that is universally accepted among healers.

After I told my 1sf therapist as a walk in that I had lots of lower back and hip pain she started treament by after 5 min she had a more important client walk in so I was pushed off to someone who never heard why I was there.  After 10-15 min of a kitty cat pawing treatment I was suppose to be happpy. I asked to pay more For  a deep  tissue treatment but she said she didn't understand the English I was speaking. Of chourse 2 min after that she knew "do u pay cash" and "how much tip" "how much tip?'
Friendly ladies! My first time Thai massage ever (although I've had plenty of Swedish and deep tissue massages in the states). After walking miles and miles a day exploring and long flight here, my body was aching and this is exactly what I needed. I booked a 90 minute Thai massage and the cost was 9000 Yen (she gave me a 10% discount though) I messaged through yelp and confirm my reservation easily.

Because Thai massage is done fully clothed, some people recommend it if you feel uncomfortable with the nudity. However, Thai massage is not the best choice for first-time spa-goers. Why? First, you're going to be lying on a futon with a therapist crouched over you, pressing on your legs, just to start. They might use the weight of their body to move your body into various positions to achieve passive stretching.
2. Generate force. When you’re putting pressure on a certain area of the body, use momentum and the full weight of your whole body to apply as much force as possible. Take advantage of gravity to hit your partner’s body with plenty of energy. Dig in by positioning your body over your arm so that your weight transfers to that specific spot. Give a hard rub to finish off the movement, and then prepare for the next area of her body.

Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM) was developed over thousands of years ago. Influenced by ancient Indian Ayurveda and Chinese practices, it includes proper nutrition, physical exercise, medicinal herbs and therapeutic massage. Traditional Thai Massage, or Nuad Phaen Boran, is based on pressure points along energy (sen) lines of the body which power physical, mental and emotional processes. Energy imbalances can disrupt the body’s harmony causing pain and disease. Our practitioners massage along energy (sen) lines and use Thai medicinal herbs to break energy blockage, stimulate circulation and restore health & well-being.

As an instructor, Burynski saw how the work benefited the students themselves, many of whom were massage therapists. “I realized that Thai massage could hold a key to career longevity for therapists,” she says. “When you are delivering downward pressure in a regular massage, you use your wrists, or biceps, for example, or other small muscles we can overuse.”
I went for a hot stone massage, she rubbed hot stones on my back at one point briefly but they weren...’t laid on my back like a usual hot stone massage. The massage didn’t flow and I question whether she was trained professionally. I felt the massage was rushed at the end. I also question why I wasn’t asked to fill out any paperwork or if I had any injuries or conditions. I won’t be coming back. See More
Massage used in the medical field includes decongestive therapy used for lymphedema[10] which can be used in conjunction with the treatment of breast cancer. Light massage is also used in pain management and palliative care. Carotid sinus massage is used to diagnose carotid sinus syncope and is sometimes useful for differentiating supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) from ventricular tachycardia. It, like the valsalva maneuver, is a therapy for SVT.[52] However, it is less effective than management of SVT with medications.[53]

I really wish I could give this place 5 stars. I really do. I came in with high expectations when I booked a reservation for both of us on a Monday after work. This is a beautiful space, and it feels like we've been transported to a calm, zen space that you would have never expected in the busy and dingy streets of the Civic Center area of San Francisco.

Thai massage, long considered a medical treatment in Thailand, the therapist puts you through a series of stretches that cover the entire body. (That’s why it’s often called lazy man’s yoga.) You lie on a floor mat or on a table wide enough to accommodate the therapist, and you wear loose-fitting clothing (often supplied by the spa), because there’s no way a sheet can stay put during these moves—the therapist might kneel on the back of your legs and pull your arms to arch your back and open your chest, or place her shoulder under your heel to lift your leg and stretch your hamstring. Thai massage also includes deep-pressure point work to stimulate the sen, or the body’s energy pathways.

These ladies are very talented! They do the most amazing deep tissue, detox and stretching massage! I've been now about 5 times and they have some amazing skills. Hint: have them walk on your back, it's the real deal.  Very professional and always a relaxing treat when the tension knots are really deep and a regular massage just won't do. Come see these ladies! They won't disappoint.

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower legs, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through regular massage. Other potential benefits of prenatal massage include: reducing back pain, joint pain, muscle tension, headaches, stress, anxiety and promoting blood circulation by improving oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles.
Many types of practices are associated with massage and include bodywork, manual therapy, energy medicine, neural mobilization and breathwork. Other names for massage and related practices include hands-on work, body/somatic therapy, and somatic movement education. Body-mind integration techniques stress self-awareness and movement over physical manipulations by a practitioner. Therapies related to movement awareness/education are closer to dance and movement therapies. Massage can also have connections with the New Age movement and alternative medicine as well as holistice philosophies of preventative medical care, as well as being used by mainstream medical practitioners.

I'd been in Tokyo, Japan for four days and have done extensive walking. I had been feeling pain to my feet and hip. I finally decided to Yelp a place and saw good reviews. I made my appointment through Yelp. Make sure you give them the day, time, name and type of service on your first communication. It's helpful...I finally came here and felt so much more flexible and the pain on my hip is gone. My feet may require rest to not feel anything but certainly feel so much better. The staff is wonderful and are very careful with the stretches they do. I highly recommend to make the trip here. Is worth it!

Massage therapists who have received specialized training and are certified in prenatal massage know how to position and support the woman's body during the massage, modify techniques, and avoid certain areas and techniques during pregnancy. Most will have a special table that allows the woman to rest comfortably and safely during the massage. Ideally, you should seek out a practitioner who is experienced and licensed in prenatal massage.
It's been about a week since I went. I was definitely pleased with my massage. I have gone to a place in mililani but My husbands client recommended I go here so I said "hey why not it's another massage therapist recommending me go there" so I did. It was the best he ever. I dozed off here and there. Wasn't to rough on me. I'm super sensitive to people rubbing my knots. They usually are painful but not here. I'll definitely be going back in a few weeks. The staff was super nice. I enjoyed my ginger honey tea after my massage as well. Much mahalos ladies. Recommendation for first timers- make sure after a massage you drink plenty of water. Massages are like work outs. Stay hydrated.

Excellent Book for the English readers to understand Thai Massage. It covers the background, relationships with Indian and Chinese system and the way Thais have adapted improved and added their indigenous system to make that into a complete system. The book also covers the spiritual nature of Thai massage, especially its relationship with Yoga . A step by step essential guide to Thai Massage practitioners that will help them to complete their practical training.
Thai massage has been practiced in America since the 1990s when Westerners began practicing it. Thai massage is more commonly found than it used to be at American spas, but you can't find it everywhere for two reasons. First, the spa needs a room with a large, padded mat in order to offer Thai massage. It's easiest if the room is always set up for Thai massage, and yet it is more of a specialty request. It just makes more economic sense to have the room set up with a table for a Swedish massage.

An aromatherapy massage is a Swedish massage with scented plant oils (known as essential oils) added to the massage oil. Extracted from flowers and other plant parts, essential oils offer a pleasing scent and are believed to have healing properties. Lavender and rose, for instance, are known to promote relaxation. Although oils may be selected to address specific needs, the therapist typically uses pre-blended oils to relax, energize, or uplift.
This massage incorporates light to medium pressure, long strokes and kneading to reduce tension, soothe sore muscles and stimulate circulation. It combines the benefits and technique of the invigorating Thai massage and the relaxing Swedish massage. Localized therapy is effective treatment for upper and lower back pain, neck and shoulder pain, muscle and tendon injuries, migraine, rheumatic pain, asthma, repetitive strain injury.
This place can be heavenly with the right massage therapist!!! My body tends to be tight and I really need that  deep tissue, good pain that comes from very strong pressure, which is why I seek Thai body massage. Anna is absolutely amazing, excellent at deep tissue/ strong pressure massage--a true healer. Anna likes to help people feel better and her intuitive massage skills, vibe and words confirm this. Anna is very strong and called herself a "knot buster," which is wonderful and true! She found knots and sore spots and broke them. I feel so much better in my body. I've been to her a few times and left very happy and satisfied each time.

I absolutely love the massage at Balinese Traditional Massage. Berta is very intuitive and knows exa...ctly where the sore spots on my body are and loosens everything up. I thoroughly recommend Balinese Traditional Massage services to anyone wanting a pampering experience and remedial work on their body, thanks to Berta I'm a lot more agile and feel great. See More
Wow! Thank you again, Yelpers! I've been dying for a massage, but I've been so busy in addition to my therapist being on vacation at my usual spot (right upstairs). I called last night when I finished work and asked for an 8p appointment for 90 minutes and boom, appointment was made - 5 Stars right there. Upon walking in, I was greeted by 2 females who were both very nice, gave me compliments, which again, earned 5 stars; I came after work in scrubs, and I knew I looked like crap lol! We chit chatted for a few minutes and she escorted me right into the room. The bed was so amazingly soft! I swear the massage beds have down stitched into it somewhere. I waited a few minutes and a lady walked in, but I didn't get her name. The massage started off rather mediocre, kind of like a first blind date where you don't expect much. We talked the whole time, and I was totally fine with that, and about 30 minutes in I thought - meh, nothing great. She started working towards my legs, but I had told her in the beginning that my shoulders were the culprit of my pain for over a month. Mid conversation I politely asked to refocus on my shoulders and THAT'S when the magic happened. She worked them bad boys like a scorned ex gf. I'm hurting today, but I feel so much better. Granted, not ALL my pain is gone, but I feel much more comfortable going through my day today. I will gladly return! Thank you for a great first time experience.

In the recent report on Thai traditional massage, Yoopat et al. reported their observation on three varieties of Thai traditional massage and concluded that “some forearm fatigue was decreased significantly among the three massage techniques.”[1] In fact, Thai traditional massage is a widely used massage technique in Thailand and is presently accepted by the Thai Ministry of Public Health. The technique can be described to be a kind of acupressure massage. Kumnerddee noted that Thai traditional massage was effective in bringing about muscle relaxation but that the technique was inferior to the worldwide well-known Chinese acupuncture.[2]
Practitioners typically use a variation of different sequences of techniques on clients, who are on the floor, on a mat, fully clothed, either in supine, seated, side or prone position. Thai massage typically works with compression, with practitioners using their feet, elbows, knees and hands to compress and stretch the client. Breath work accompanies the stretches, which often look like a form of passive yoga. “It’s like going to a massage therapist, yoga class and chiropractor,” says Jill Burynski, an Asheville, North Carolina-based massage therapist and Thai massage instructor.
You've probably seen these strange contraptions at conventions, the mall, nail parlors, and maybe even your office. Chair massages have you sitting face forward in a chair so the therapist can massage mostly your neck, shoulders, and back. The good thing is you don't have to take off your clothes or have oils slathered all over you. The bad thing is you don't get a thorough whole-body massage as you do with other methods, and, since this is often done in public places, it can be very distracting and not as relaxing. Depending on the massage therapist, however, a chair massage can really get the tension out of your upper body.
Massage is big business in Thailand. It is regulated by the Public Health Ministry. The Commerce and Tourism and Sports Ministries have set a target of 20 billion baht per year to be generated by the spa business, but only 500 of the 2,000 spas nationwide are legally registered with the authorities. The legal difference between a "spa" and a "massage parlour" is unclear. The Federation of Thai Spa Associations (FTSPA) in 2016 urged authorities to clamp down on sexual services being offered at some massage parlours. The FTSPA maintains that influential figures have used legal loopholes to open "pretty spas" or massage parlours where tourists can buy sexual services.[11]
My massage therapy services are Thai Yoga Massage, Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage,Herbal Compression, Hot Stone Massage and Warm Bamboo Massage Come and be pampered by our qualified therapist and experience the world of relaxation and rejuvenate yourself. My massage therapy is absolutely professional, legitimate, ethical and completely respectful in nature, no improper conduct will be tolerated.

Because of its emphasis on body work, joint release, and deep breathing, Thai massage is often considered comparable to yoga. Modern yoga practice often includes traditional elements intrinsic in Eastern religion, including spiritual philosophy, postures designed to keep the body fit, and varying facets of meditation. These elements are sometimes adapted to meet the needs of non-religious practitioners, who may be attracted to yoga by its utility as a relaxation technique or as a way to keep in good shape.

An Indian physician named Shivago Kumar Bhucca, a contemporary of the Buddha, is often credited with developing Thai massage. The impetus was to give monks and nuns the flexibility to sit for long hours in meditation. Whatever its genesis, massage was considered such a crucial aspect of medical treatment in Thailand that until the early 20th century, the Thai Department of Health included an official massage division. Thai massage is based on releasing blockages along ten lines of energy called sen, which are similar to the meridians of traditional Chinese medicine. The technique incorporates stroking and kneading of muscles, manipulation of joints, and pressure applied to specific points in order to balance the body’s four elements—earth, water, fire, and air. But there’s also rocking, breathing, and lots of stretching—Thai massage is often referred to as “lazy yoga.”
While on vacation in Las Vegas, my upper back, shoulders, and neck were starting to get tired/tight from me lugging around my camera gear (DSLR camera, battery grip/pack, & speedlight flash) around my neck for 4 days at roughly 4 hours each day. My legs and feet were also tired from all the walking, standing, and running on the Strip. I was looking for a massage and the place that I was staying at offered massages but I found the prices to be too expensive. I had also tried the water massage beds offered in some malls (including the Showcase Mall) and although those water massage beds were relaxing, I preferred a more firm, deep tissue type massage to try to get rid of the knots that I was sure were building up in my shoulders & upper back. As luck would have it, there was a discussion forum about firm, deep tissue massages in the Las Vegas Talk forum. I checked out the prices and the review and called to make an appointment. Even factoring the Lyft ride to/from the place, I calculated the price to be less than how much it would cost me to get a similar type massage at the place I was staying at or any Strip hotel spa. I arrived early and was told that I should come back in ~30 minutes. Since the temperature was cold outside, I asked if I could stay inside and there wasn't an issue. I was told that I could lay on the bed while I waited but I decided I would just sit there. I used the Yelp app on my phone to check in and there was a discount. I spoke with the person behind the counter about the discount and I was informed that because I wanted a 90 minute massage and the 90 minute massage was already discounted, it would not apply. When the person was ready I was escorted to the room. Inside the room there were 2 massage beds. I was asked how long I wanted and I mentioned that I wanted 90 minutes. I was then asked to undress and go underneath the towel. I was told that this place also specializes in back walking so I requested a few minutes of that. Above the massage tables are 2 bars so the massage therapist can hold on as to not apply all her weight on the customer. I thought that I could handle firm massages but Kim gave me one of the firmest, deep tissue massages that I've ever experienced. The oil that she used had a burning and soothing feeling to it. Part of the 90 minute massage also involved stretching certain muscles. At the end of the 90 minutes, even though I was a little bit sore from the deep tissue massage, I felt a lot better. When the massage was over, I got dressed, went to the front counter, and paid as well as left a tip. While I used the Lyft app on my phone to get ride to get back to the Strip, I was offered a loyalty card. The only thing about the loyalty card is that it was created/made for 60 minute massages and not 90 minute massages since a 90 minute massage only gets 1 stamp on the card. If you like firm (deep tissue) massages, this is the place to go.

Noticed this place while driving by, we stopped by for a much needed massage! Julie was my massage therapist. She was wonderful. I had a bunch of knots and she was strong enough to kick my knots butts! I rather enjoy the pain bc I know that afterwards I'll be in less pain! Will come back. The price was good in comparison to other places and I will definitely be back as she recommended I come more often bc the knots are rather large bc of my extensive workouts.
Your entire treatment will be specifically designed to your own needs. As an example, one procedure might target a specific issue area such as back or muscle pain or stiff shoulders, while an additional might be employed as an all-over treatment. The therapist will use all kinds of therapeutic massage techniques including pressing, squeezing, kneading, pounding and pummeling to invigorate your acupoints to unblock your energy channels and help facilitate the flow of your chi. Knuckles, thumbs, and even elbows will be used, and there are many variations to oil-based massages. Tui Na professionals use the backs of their knuckles and hands similar to a rolling pin, which is believed to support and disperse the QI. Unlike various other massage techniques, all your limbs will be moved quite frequently.

Ive had massages all over the country from Hawaii and Cali to New York and Jersey as well as Philippines and Guam ... Anna, Noi and Choi from Thai Spa 2 are hands down the best thai masseuse's I've ever experienced. I prefer deep, strong massages ... and the strength of any of these 3 can make u cringe, but i love it!  Once you try thai, u'll forget about any other types of massages!
Deep tissue and trigger point massages are very similar. The difference is that deep tissue massage uses various traditional massage techniques to work the tissue, whereas trigger point massage is literally looking to manipulate or press on that one point that relieves tension in an entire area (perhaps not even nearby). For both, consider this contraption, which is an invaluable tool for torturing soothing sore muscles all over your body. This is a great guide on doing trigger point therapy for yourself.

In response to the business owner, I mentioned this on my call to her but there was no other strenuous or unusual movement of my neck during this period. I've also had to visit a chiropractor three times since coming back to the US due to the extreme pain, and he also affirmed that bad technique during the massage must be the reason (based on my alignment). Very poor experience, and I really wish Erawan would rethink their refund policy for situations like these, as this has become a very expensive massage due to the additional chiropractor expenses accrued.
Mary, my masseuse, began on my upper back and worked her way down to my legs and then arms (my favorite part). And surprisingly, I had a lot of knots, especially on my upper back. There were these two knots that would not budge unless I got the really deeeeep massage (but my body's too weak). Mary tried her best to press out my knots without hurting me (thumbs up to her!). She put coconut oil over my body as she worked, making it easier for area transitions. The oil felt more like a lotion combination, smoothing and rejuvenating my skin. In the end, we were offered water or tea. Siam Thai definitely takes pride in caring for their customers!
First time at this spa for me, after reading reviews I realized that language might be a problem. I went in to get a deep tissue massage and had problems with arthritis in my shoulder, summer worked extra on my shoulder and the massage was wonderful I read cupping was included in the massage and it was not , but that would have taken time from my massage so no problem.  Not what I consider a spa but a great massage, very authentic Chinese massage
Iyara Traditional Thai Massage introduces a type of massage in Thai style that involves stretching and deep body massage. This form of bodywork is usually performed on the floor, and the client wears comfortable clothes that allow for movement. No oils are used in this Thai massage. It is known in Thailand as "Nuat Phaen Boran" (นวดแผนโบราณ), literally, the ancient-manner massage.

My boyfriend booked our first full body Thai couples massage (literally our FIRST massage experience) here at Siam Thai. We've heard about many massage places but decided to have it here due to the various options and two different atmospheres (modern and vintage) at the Century Center. There's a private lot to park at. The fee (no matter how long we park) is $2 flat! Just don't forget to get it validated prior to leaving. He made a night reservation at their "modern" location for my birthday. We walked into the room and was greeted with a lovely scent, great night view of Waikiki, and a beautiful heart design to take pictures of/with. After entering, don't forget to take your shoes off! We were greeted by the owner, Tanya, and offered water as soon as we entered and waited for our room. She kept us company and led us to our room with two massage beds and another grand view. We were instructed on how to prepare as we waited a little longer for our masseuses to arrive. Being the awkward first timers we were, we actually didn't know what to actually do and expect. But our masseuses, Mary and Claudia, were very patient with us! Mary, my masseuse, began on my upper back and worked her way down to my legs and then arms (my favorite part). And surprisingly, I had a lot of knots, especially on my upper back. There were these two knots that would not budge unless I got the really deeeeep massage (but my body's too weak). The oil felt more like a lotion combination, smoothing and rejuvenating my skin. In the end, we were offered water or tea. Siam Thai definitely takes pride in caring for their customers! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our time at Siam Thai and will definitely be back for more massages. Especially trying to press those knots out of my upper back! The interior was beautifully done, service was superb, and the massage was excellent. Next time, we'll try out their other services!
After walking for hours and visiting the various sites and not to mention the long flight, I decided to find a great massage place. I requested an appointment through yelp and received a response very quickly. Although it was difficult to locate (go up the stairs and take the elevators on the side of the video gaming place), all the stress and tension went away after the massage. She did a great job focusing on my problem areas and I walked away from there feeling relaxed. They offer combination packages that are worth it so be sure to check out their website.
Came to Siam Orchid because my friend strongly recommended it. We went together, she had a great experience with a therapist called Pancake. Mine therapist was not as strong as Pancake. (Forgot her name) She couldn't give me the right points pressure. After all, I have been doing massage for over 15 years I know what the best is. I still would like to give it 5 stars because it's a very nice and clean place. You absolutely feel relaxed after having 1 hour massage. Lighting, background music and decoration are perfect here. I would also like to have another try next time.

This is the real deal. Yes, the exterior (outside plaza) might make you think otherwise but trust me, the place is legit. Inside the room was clean; I liked how they had all white sheets and towels. Some massage places have darker sheets/towels which kind of grosses me out. Anyways, I went here based on my fellow yelpers' reviews and I was not disappointed.  I've been having lower back pains, stiff neck and knotted shoulders (because I'm a stylist)....and let me tell ya, right after I was done with the 1.5 hour long massage, I felt like I was on a cloud. My back pain was gone and the lady loosened up all my knots. This is a Thai massage so just a little reminder that most of your massage is going to be done by feet, stepping on your back, etc.

A "vacation" in Tokyo certainly requires a lot of walking. After logging 10+ miles a few days in a row, our bodies were in need of a little R&R. There are certainly a lot of options for massages in Japan, but Erawan definitely appeals to tourists. It was SO easy to request an appointment via Yelp. They got back to me within a hour and we had appointments setup later that day.
