I'm not an expert in massages, but I can tell you the 60 minute deep tissue massage did wonders for my back and leg muscles and the whole experience was very relaxing. A nice break from the stress of traveling. Setting up the appointment through Yelp was very easy to do. They will send you directions because it is not easy to find from street level (business is on the fourth floor). The elevator on the left only goes up one floor. If you take the Tokyo subway to Roppongi station as I did and go up any random exit, it may be hard to find. Recommend following the directions they provide and exit the station using the closest exit.

A "vacation" in Tokyo certainly requires a lot of walking. After logging 10+ miles a few days in a row, our bodies were in need of a little R&R. There are certainly a lot of options for massages in Japan, but Erawan definitely appeals to tourists. It was SO easy to request an appointment via Yelp. They got back to me within a hour and we had appointments setup later that day.

Thai Massage, YES, please!! Found this cute little place on... yes, YELP. I enjoy very firm pressure massages and usually disappointed with therapists that don't have the strength or fluidity I enjoy in a massage. The petite gal I had was amazing. She walked on my back, stretched me in ways, I never been stretched and found knots I didn't know I had. If I'm in the city with time to kill, I will most definitely come back for more!
You definitely need to make an appointment. Thai massages are amazing, but if you've never had one be aware they put a lot of pressure on your back. They step on it, use elbows, anything they can to get to the problem. Yes, you will be sore the next day, and maybe the day after. But I assure you I only need to do this once a month as a necessary "mom massage." Being of Thai descent I can tell you they do an amazing job and worth every penny.
Tui na is a branch of Chinese medicine, which looks at the underlying causes of pain and illness as well as the symptoms. Because Tui na massage can be very relaxing, it is particularly useful to relieve anxiety and stress, promote relaxation and aid sleep. Like other forms of massage, it can be used preventatively, to encourage the movement of Qi (vital energy) and Blood. Tui na can be used in conjunction with the other branches of traditional Chinese medicine such as Acupuncture.
In ashiatsu, the practitioner uses their feet to deliver treatment. The name comes from the Japanese, ashi for foot and atsu for pressure. This technique typically uses the heel, sesamoid, arch and/or whole plantar surface of foot, and offers large compression, tension and shear forces with less pressure than an elbow, and is ideal for large muscles, such as in thigh, or for long-duration upper trapezius compressions. Other manual therapy techniques using the feet to provide treatment include Keralite, Barefoot Lomi Lomi, Chavutti Thirumal.
I really wish I could give this place 5 stars. I really do. I came in with high expectations when I booked a reservation for both of us on a Monday after work. This is a beautiful space, and it feels like we've been transported to a calm, zen space that you would have never expected in the busy and dingy streets of the Civic Center area of San Francisco.
Proprioceptive studies are much more abundant than massage and proprioception combined, yet researchers are still trying to pinpoint the exact mechanisms and pathways involved to get a fuller understanding. Proprioception may be very helpful in rehabilitation, though this is a fairly unknown characteristic of proprioception, and "current exercises aimed at 'improving proprioception' have not been demonstrated to achieve that goal". Up until this point, very little has been studied looking into the effects of massage on proprioception. Some researchers believe "documenting what happens under the skin, bioelectrically and biochemically, will be enabled by newer, non-invasive technology such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and continuous plasma sampling".
